MushLume: Biofabricated Lighting Made in NYC

Biofabricated lighting that is not manufactured but grown, MushLume Lighting Collection designs and recreates lampshades using a sustainable crop, hemp—that is combined with a rapidly renewable living organism—mycelium.

The lamps are shaped by hand and GROWN at their Brooklyn studio. In just a few days, the mycelium grows, cultivating a thick network of hyphae that binds to the hemp substrate, solidifying into a solid structure within the custom lampshade molds. After the mycelium has fully matured, the lampshades are demolded, dried and heated, creating a stable, inert and 100% biodegradable product.

Their goal is to redefine what interior objects are made from, and provide sustainable alternatives for the design industry stating that, “The future of design is all about a delicate dance of working with nature, not against, in order to create a more symbiotic relationship”

By altering the growing environment they can create different outcomes such as biologically expressed color, a softer outer skin, stronger structural integrity, or even the presence of fruiting bodies from the lampshades. The results are reimagined lampshades that are both stunning to look at and healthy for the environment!

MushLume Lighting Collection is a woman’s owned company by Founder and Designer, Danielle Trofe. The lampshades now come in several colors that are naturally pigmented, mineral based, and non toxic. The MushLume Lighting collection collaborates with nature, demonstrating that the beauty of our interior spaces does not have to come at the cost of the exterior world.
